The tragic loss of hymns

One thing is very sad in the modern Christian society and that is the lack of hymns sung in church. I admit, there are some very good praise songs that I really do enjoy, but by limiting (and in some cases: eliminating) hymns, Christians are missing out on some amazingly deep and meaningful worship. Hymns are not only wonderful for their poetic and musical artistry, but also the strength and conviction of the lyrics. While one may mouth off some of these repetitive, new worship songs, it's rather difficult to hypocritically recite every word in a hymn without feeling convicted. I believe that we're missing out on some amazing "meat" and settling for surface, "milk" quality praise songs.

There are my thoughts on the subject; I leave you with the lyrics from one of my favorite hymns:

O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in Thee.
I give Thee back the life I owe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O Light that follow'st all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to Thee.
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in Thy sunshine's blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me thro' pain,
I cannot close my heart to Thee.
I trace the rainbow thro' the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee.
I lay in dust life's glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
